Hacker "neuron," a former member of LulzSec, receives prison sentence for Sony cyberattack.
In a series of events that shook the digital world, a 21-year-old American hacker, Raynaldo Rivera, was recently jailed for hacking the website of Japanese entertainment giant Sony Pictures. The hacking incident, which occurred in 2011, was part of a larger campaign by the hacking group LulzSec.
Rivera, along with his former college mate Cody Kretsinger, used a SQL injection to extract personal data of 138,000 customers from Sony Pictures' website. The pair then published this data on the Internet.
LulzSec, the hacking group to which Rivera belonged, claimed its motivation was "the raw, uninterrupted, chaotic thrill of entertainment and anarchy" and to publish personal data "so that equally evil people can entertain us with what they do with it". The group targeted various institutions, including Sony Pictures, News International, and the NHS.
Meanwhile, in the UK, three members of LulzSec pleaded guilty to computer hacking charges this year, related to attacks on targets including Sony, News International, and the NHS. Among them was Ryan Cleary, who was jailed for two years and eight months, the longest sentence given to a hacker in the UK.
It was reported earlier this year that Cleary is due to be released imminently. However, recent reports suggest that his release from prison is imminent.
The FBI issued a statement regarding the hacking incident, confirming the involvement of LulzSec and the use of SQL injection on Sony Pictures' website. The statement emphasised the seriousness of such cybercrimes and the need for continued vigilance in protecting sensitive information.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of cybercrime and the importance of securing digital infrastructure. As technology continues to evolve, so too must our efforts to protect against such threats.
