Indian motorcycle brand Royal Enfield leads in one potential tally, standing out as the largest among competitors.

Harley-Davidson, BMW Motorrad, and KTM may have traditionally garnered significant attention in the motorcycling world, but Royal Enfield is allegedly challenging this dominance.

Forget Japan, China, or even the heavy hitters like Harley-Davidson and BMW - when it comes to revenue and volume in mid-range motorcycles, it's India that's causing a stir. And the culprit? None other than the Indian motorcycle manufacturer, Royal Enfield.

Although brands like Harley-Davidson and BMW command a higher revenue stream, and the Japanese powerhouses Honda and Yamaha lead the pack in overall production, when we narrow our focus to mid-range motorcycles, Royal Enfield takes the crown.

Kai Petermann, responsible for the brand's distribution in Germany, sheds light on the situation, "Royal Enfield doesn't produce 125cc or smaller engines, which are primarily used by major manufacturers to boost their production numbers. We don't produce mopeds, light motorcycles, or similar vehicles."

In the last fiscal year, Royal Enfield crossed the 1 million mark, producing a staggering 1,009,000 units. Their engines range from 250 to 750cc and come in four series: 350cc single-cylinder, two air-cooled engines - a 440cc single-cylinder and a 650cc twin-cylinder, and a 450cc single-cylinder with liquid cooling.

India's Premium Motorcycle Phenomenon

Royal Enfield is quickly becoming a force to reckon with in the motorcycle industry, particularly in its home market. The brand is not only growing consistently but is also increasingly popular in Asia and beyond, including Germany. In fact, the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) ranked Royal Enfield among the top 12 volume brands for motorcycles last year.

Looking ahead, Royal Enfield is setting its sights on the twin-cylinder segment, introducing the "Bear 650" and "Classic 650" models in 2025. These additions will bring their portfolio to a total of 12 models, available in multiple variants and colors.

Prices for these stylish steeds range from approximately €4,490 for the most affordable model, the HNTR 350, to €8,390 for the high-end Super Meteor 650 "Celestial." The new "Bear" falls between €7,640 and €7,890, while the new Classic 650 ranges between €7,090 and €7,390. In addition to these offerings, an electric motorcycle was recently announced.

Expansion and Ambition

To boost its presence in Germany, Royal Enfield is significantly expanding its presence by establishing its own German subsidiary. This move will enhance customer service and is set to begin operations in the Freiburg region in the autumn.

While Royal Enfield has made substantial strides, it's still a drop in the ocean compared to global giants like Honda and Yamaha. However, in the mid-range market, this steadily growing Indian brand is a formidable contender, particularly in the Indian market and increasingly worldwide.

  1. In the mid-range motorcycle market, Royal Enfield, a motorcycle manufacturer from India, surpasses brands like Harley-Davidson and BMW, as well as Japanese powerhouses Honda and Yamaha.
  2. Despite not producing small engines, mopeds, light motorcycles, or similar vehicles, Royal Enfield managed to produce 1,009,000 units in the last fiscal year, making it the biggest producer in the mid-range motorcycle market.
  3. Royal Enfield's engines range from 250 to 750cc and their motorcycles are divided into four series: 350cc single-cylinder, two air-cooled engines - a 440cc single-cylinder and a 650cc twin-cylinder, and a 450cc single-cylinder with liquid cooling.
  4. As the market expands, Royal Enfield plans to introduce the "Bear 650" and "Classic 650" models in 2025, bringing their portfolio to a total of 12 models.
  5. With prices ranging from €4,490 to €8,390, Royal Enfield's motorcycles are becoming increasingly popular not only in their home market but also in Asia and beyond, even making it into the top 12 volume brands for motorcycles in Germany.
