Naples-Bari High-Speed Railway: First Arch Bridge Installed

The Naples-Bari high-speed railway is taking shape with the installation of its first arch bridge, marking a significant step towards the development of sustainable mobility in the region. This strategic link between northern and southern Italy will reduce travel time between the two cities and serve as a vital connection for the region.

The first installed bridge, approximately 80 metres long and 21 metres high, weighs a massive 2,500 tonnes. Its installation was performed with minimal disruption to traffic, thanks to the latest in heavy transport equipment. The bridge is part of the Naples-Cancello section, a 15.5-kilometre stretch that will pass through towns like Casoria, Casalnuovo, Afragola, Caivano, and Acerra.

About 300 businesses from the local supply chain are contributing to the Naples-Cancello section, with 183 of them based in southern Italy. The section will also include a new station in the town of Napoli-Afragola, serving as an interchange with regional trains.

The Naples-Cancello section is not the only part of the high-speed railway under construction. The Apice-Hirpinia section, running for 18 kilometres, will cross the Apennine and include three natural tunnels and four viaducts. This section will also have a station at Hirpinia.

A total of 600 people are currently working on both the Naples-Cancello and Apice-Hirpinia sections, with an expected increase to 930 by 2022. The construction of these sections is being handled by Webuild, the company responsible for the construction of the Napoli-Afragola station for the new railway station between Naples and Bari.

The Naples-Bari high-speed railway will significantly cut travel time between Milan and Bari, with trips expected to take just six hours. Once completed, the travel time between Naples and Bari will be reduced to about two hours, making travel between the two cities more efficient and convenient.

This high-speed railway is more than just an infrastructure project; it's a testament to the region's commitment to sustainable mobility and economic development. With its completion, the Naples-Bari high-speed railway will undoubtedly become a significant connection between northern and southern Italy, fostering closer ties and promoting economic growth.
