India Launches E-Passport Programme Nationwide
India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has launched Passport Seva Programme 2.0, marking the nationwide rollout of e-Passports. The service is now available in multiple cities, including Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, and Chennai.
Applicants can apply for an e-Passport through the Passport Seva Online Portal. The process involves filling in necessary details, scheduling an appointment, and completing physical verification at the Passport Office. Alternatively, one can visit local Passport Seva Kendras or Post Office centers for biometric enrolment.
The e-Passport features contactless chip-based technology, streamlining travel and immigration procedures. It is issued by the Ministry of External Affairs' Consular, Passport & Visa (CPV) Division. The eligibility criteria for e-Passports are similar to those of regular Indian passports and will soon be the standard for all new applicants.
The mPassport Police App has significantly reduced police verification time for passports, now taking only 5-7 days. Required documents for application include proof of address and date of birth, with additional documents needed for re-issuance.
The introduction of e-Passports in India aims to enhance security and efficiency in travel. With the rollout of Passport Seva Programme 2.0, applicants can now enjoy a more convenient and secure passport application process.
