Indian Smartphone Market experiences a moderate expansion of 1%, reaching 70 million units within the Jan-June duration, as stated in a recent report.
================================================================
India's smartphone market experienced a significant boost in the first half of 2025, with a total of 70 million units shipped, marking a 0.9% year-on-year (YoY) growth. This growth was driven by several factors, including price reductions on older models, increased offline channel margins, and strong above-the-line (ATL) marketing efforts.
Apple's iPhone 16 was the standout performer, leading smartphone sales in both Q1 and Q2 of 2025, accounting for over 55% of Apple’s shipments in India during Q2. The iPhone 16 series, in particular, was the top-performing model across India in the first half of 2025. However, the iPhone 16e did not perform as well due to design and feature trade-offs.
Vivo dominated overall smartphone shipments in India in Q2 2025 with 8.1 million units, representing a 21% market share. This success was largely due to strong sales of its V50, Y-series, and T-series models, especially in the ₹10,000-₹15,000 price segment.
Samsung held second place in shipment volume with 6.2 million units, leveraging its mid-premium models like the Galaxy A36 and A56. Importantly, Samsung became the largest premium smartphone brand (phones priced above $800) in India in Q2 2025, propelled by the Galaxy S24 and S25 series, surpassing Apple in that segment.
Oppo and Xiaomi both shipped around 5 million units in Q2 2025. Oppo’s strong offline A5 series and online K13 series helped it edge ahead of Xiaomi, which relied on the Redmi 14C 5G and Note 14 series.
Other notable performers included Motorola, Infinix, and Nothing, with Nothing achieving explosive year-on-year growth of 229%, fueled by design-focused models like the CMF Phone 2 Pro and Phone 3a series.
In the premium segment ($600-$800), the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 held a combined share of three-fifths of the shipments. Notably, the premium segment registered the highest growth of 96.4% YoY, with its market share up from 2% to 4%. In the super-premium segment ($800 and above), growth was 15.8% and its share remained flat at 7%.
The growth in the entry-level segment was not mentioned in the earlier bullet points. However, it registered a robust 22.9% YoY growth, capturing a 16% market share. Xiaomi topped the entry-level segment with its budget Redmi A4 and A5 models.
Vivo, OPPO, and realme dominate the mass budget segment, holding a combined 60% market share. Samsung surpassed Apple for the leadership position in the smartphone market, holding 49% share. Apple held 48% share in the smartphone market.
In summary, the iPhone 16 and Vivo’s Y and T series were top sellers individually, while Samsung led the premium segment with the Galaxy S24/S25 series and held strong mid-range sales. The market volume leaders were Vivo and Samsung, with Oppo also very competitive. The industry's momentum in the first half of 2025 combined strong premium and mid/entry-level offerings, alongside aggressive retail campaigns and financing options boosting sales.
