The EcoFlow Stream balcony energy storage system doesn't just deliver over 800 watts of self-produced power to your devices. It also intelligently integrates dynamic tariffs and distributes energy as required within your home network with ease, making it an ideal tool for swiftly recouping your investment.

Like larger solar systems, smaller balcony power plants often generate the most electricity when demand is low. The same goes for dynamic tariffs, where low-prices prevail during periods of high energy production but low consumption. By storing excess or particularly cheap electricity in batteries and feeding it back into the home network during less sunny days or high-price periods, the EcoFlow Stream takes full advantage of this discrepancy. Let’s see whether this smart technology lives up to the hype.

Three Distinct Stream Models

The Stream system offers three different battery storage units with a 1.92 kWh capacity each, all sporting a similar design that can be expanded modularly. These batteries rely on durable lithium iron phosphate cells (LiFePO4), which are said to preserve at least 70% of their capacity after 6000 charge cycles. According to EcoFlow, this capacity retention translates to a lifespan of up to 15 years, with a warranty offered for ten years.

The Stream Ultra (€950) boasts an integrated bidirectional inverter and four solar module connections (MPPT), providing a comprehensive all-in-one solution. With a maximum photovoltaic input power of 2000 watts, the Ultra can directly power devices with up to 2300 watts of alternating current (AC).

The Stream Pro is the pared-down version of the Ultra, offering three solar connections and a maximum input power of 1500 W. The Stream AC Pro, however, functions as a standalone power storage system without solar module connections, capable of being used as an expansion battery for other Stream models or charged via the home network.

Sleek and Robust Design

The Stream battery storage units are not compact for their capacity, standing at 28 cm x 25 cm x 46 cm. Yet their tower design enables seamless integration into the home, making them less conspicuous. If they do attract attention, their metal finish ensures an appealing aesthetic. Unfortunately, the integrated LED strips that display the charge level cannot be turned off at night.

Designed as portable units, the Stream batteries can be moved to alternative locations if necessary, boasting IP65 dust and water protection. EcoFlow offers wall brackets for secure mounting, and an integrated heating system lets users operate the units down to -20°C.

Swift and Easy Setup Process

To evaluate all settings, we received a Stream Ultra and two Stream AC Pro units from EcoFlow. The installation and commissioning process is incredibly straightforward. The Ultra simply connects to the solar modules and then links to the home network via a standard wall socket. Through the Stream app (available for Android and iOS devices), the device is instantly recognized, allowing for firmware updates and configuration settings to be adjusted.

The Ultra serves as an immediate power supply for two power outlets, ready to make use of up to 400W of excess solar power, rather than wasting it. This is possible without a storage unit, provided that surplus production does not exceed 800W and is sent directly to the power grid, with remuneration averaging around €0.08 per kWh in Germany.

If this isn't sufficient, multiple storage units can be linked together for enhanced power capacity, with the unique feature of the Stream system allowing for connection to other devices in the system via WLAN. In this manner, the devices communicate with each other and balance their power distribution as needed, allowing for up to 2000W of power distribution.

A connectingStream device drawing more power than available will pull power from the grid as usual, though it never exceeds the Ultra's 2000W maximum output. For instance, an espresso machine (1200W) can operate with no issues, as can a washing machine in the 60° program (nearly 200W). However, a 2500W water boiler triggered the fuse on the connected battery.

Charging with Solar Power or Dynamic Tariffs

In most households equipped with a balcony storage system, charging the units exclusively with solar power is advisable. Utilizing additional grid power for this purpose becomes costly with fixed tariffs, as energy conversion losses can reach up to 15-20%. In contrast, using premium power directly from the socket is more efficient.

Interestingly, electricity costs become more intriguing with dynamic tariffs, where prices are adjusted every hour based on stock exchange prices. This means that during periods of high solar and wind generation, prices drop to unusually low levels. With construction standards in Germany mandating the availability of dynamic tariffs and smart meters since 2021, the number of households utilizing these plans is projected to rapidly increase.

Optimizing Price Fluctuations

During the day, price fluctuations are often dramatic. On June 3, for example, the total price per kWh (Tibber) in Berlin ranged from about €0.22 to €0.45. To benefit from these price disparities, storage units are charged during economical times whenever solar production falls short. This is particularly relevant during winter months when wind power is common, and prices often drop at night due to reduced demand.

Navigating price fluctuations can be achieved in multiple ways:

  1. Time-of-Use (TOU) Mode: This option allows the Ecoflow app to synchronize charging times with a dynamic tariff, using AI to create a plan that optimizes energy usage during the lowest tariff periods. The initial KI-Modus-Premium costs roughly €10 per month or €100 annually, offering added analysis and solar forecasts for complex systems. However, the complementary, free tariff is generally suitable for most households.
  2. Smart Meter: A smart meter from EcoFlow can facilitate data collection for superior system optimization, provided it has a wireless connection. Unfortunately, building installations do not typically offer wireless connectivity, and smart plugs can be utilized for power circuits not connected directly to a Stream storage device.

Smart Energy Management Sweetens the Deal

The EcoFlow Stream system has proven to be an excellent complement to balcony power plants, enabling the efficient utilization of generated electricity and saving money, even without a dynamic tariff. Its cost-efficient operation makes the purchase worthwhile for many users.
