Innovative Trailer for F1 The Movie by Apple Leaves Me Stunned with Its Quality

Wrangling the Revvafied Reality of F1 Trailers on iPhone 15 Plus

A few days back, I found myself engrossed in my iPhone 15 Plus's myriad updates - yes, we all procrastinate like that, right? Amidst the chaos, something on the Apple App Store caught my eye: a teaser for F1 The Movie on the Apple TV app.

Trailers? Normally, I'd steer clear of them. They give away so much these days, why bother going to the movies? But this wasn’t your average trailer; it boasted being a ‘haptic trailer’. Apple had leveraged the Taptic Engine within its iPhones to create vibrations that synced with the on-screen action - enter the previously unknown realm of haptic trailers.

Intrigued, I decided to check it out, determined to see whether the experience would be more than just a shiny new gimmick.

Turns out, I was pleasantly surprised. Sony had experimented with similar features back in the day for its older Xperia smartphones - called Dynamic Vibration. But somehow, Apple managed to nail the precision and intensity, making it feel less like a novelty and more like an immersive movie experience right in the palm of your hand.

Here's the lowdown on the haptic trailer. To watch it, you'll need an iPhone running iOS 18.4 or later with the Apple TV app installed. As the car engines fired up, so did the Taptic Engine, giving you a real-life jolt as the engines roared. The vibrations mimicked simply the quick burst of selecting a gear to the prolonged vibration from tires screeching through the pit lane.

But things really went up a notch when the action moved onto the track. The speed of the haptics, the speed of the cars, combined with the fact you’re holding the phone in landscape mode, gives it a unique, engaging feel. You'd almost think you were about to play an F1 racing game on a PS5 or Xbox.

I won’t lie; I was hooked. The Taptic Engine’s rapid speed, wide range of intensities, and nearly flawless synchronicity with the action kept me locked to my screen. Better still, wearing headphones intensified the experience even more - transcending the befuddling lip-sync errors of yore by keeping the vibrations perfectly synchronized with the action.

Wearing just the iPhone's speakers did the trick, but it didn’t draw me in quite as much. So, will I be rushing off to the cinema to watch the movie? It undoubtedly succeeded in piquing my interest; the question remains whether spending two and a half hours with my iPhone's vibrations would be preferable to the comfort of movie theater seating!

Without question, consuming content using haptic feedback from a smartphone may never replace the movie-going experience, but one thing's for sure - Apple’s haptic trailer reigns as a clever marketing maneuver that reeks of finesse - and darned be people who think otherwise!
