Insight: The Impact of Security on One's IBC Experience

In the ever-evolving world of media and entertainment, the importance of security has never been more pressing. This was evident at the recently concluded IBC2025, where security of content and infrastructure was a focal point of presentations and panel discussions.

Friend MTS, a leading provider of content protection services, hosted an event at IBC2025 that shed light on the world of content piracy. The statistics presented were startling, analogous to the cocaine trade in scale, underscoring the urgent need for action.

International organized crime groups have been found to be involved in content piracy, extending their tendrils into homes of consumers. Many may not realise the involvement of such groups when they watch their favourite sports teams via nefarious means.

The media and entertainment business often take a conservative approach to embracing new technologies, but the shift towards digital platforms has made security an issue that can no longer be ignored.

Industry groups are lobbying for changes to the regulatory environment across the EU and beyond, with some nations, such as Germany and Estonia, categorizing the broadcasting sector as Critical National Infrastructure. This recognition highlights the importance of securing our broadcast systems against potential threats.

However, legislation often lags behind technological advances, and the solution to the apparent arms race between industry and technological advancements might be societal, rather than legislative.

The topic of security, in all its forms, was a constant conversation at IBC2025, and it seems likely that it will remain a prominent topic in the months ahead. It is crucial that nation states take the security of their broadcast industries more seriously, ensuring the protection of both their citizens and their critical infrastructure.
