Instagram CEO Clarifies: No Conversation Listening for Ads
Instagram's CEO Adam Mosseri has reassured users about the app's ad personalization methods. He clarified that Instagram does not listen to users' conversations for targeted ads.
Instagram's ad personalization relies on user activity within the app. It considers visited profiles, pages, and interactions to serve personalized ads. The algorithm also takes into account the activity of users' friends and those with similar interests.
Mosseri addressed concerns about the app listening to conversations. Instead, Instagram obtains information about users' interests through their usage behavior on and off the platform. This includes pages visited, products selected, and previous orders, often linked via digital identifiers. These data are used to create personalized ad profiles, displaying targeted ads within the app. Advertisers and data brokers can also provide additional information based on user cookie consent. Likes from other Meta-owned platforms like Facebook and Threads may also be used for ad personalization.
Instagram's ad personalization is driven by user activity and behavior, not active conversation listening. The app uses this data to create targeted ad profiles, enhancing the user experience and providing relevant content. Mosseri's clarification should reassure users about the app's data collection practices.
