Insurance victors and vanquished in emerging motor policy categories
Economic Impact of GDV's Progressive Classroom Type Reform on Motor Vehicle Insurance
The German Automobile Club (ADAC) has announced a significant change in motor vehicle liability and comprehensive insurance premiums, set to officially begin on January 1, 2026. The reform, already being implemented by many insurance companies, will affect approximately 10.4 million drivers.
According to the ADAC, around 5.9 million vehicles will be classified higher, resulting in higher insurance premiums. However, around 4.5 million drivers could benefit from more favorable classifications. For 32 million motor vehicle insured, representing 75% of all drivers, the type class remains unchanged.
One of the vehicles that will see a decrease in insurance costs is the Lynk & Co 01, which benefits from the new type classes with a saving of 1,029 euros in fully comprehensive insurance. Similarly, the VW Polo V (2010 to 2014) benefits from the new type classes with a saving of 201 euros in fully comprehensive insurance.
Notable increases in insurance premiums are expected for the Renault Austral, Hyundai Kona, and electric Smart #1. The increases for these vehicles are overall between 20 and 24 percent. Renault Austral drivers will have to pay 131 euros more in liability insurance, while the Renault Austral will have an increase of up to 211 euros in fully comprehensive insurance. The Hyundai Kona will have an increase of 184 euros in partial coverage insurance.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC 220D, on the other hand, benefits from the new type classes with a saving of 707 euros in fully comprehensive insurance. The Mitsubishi Colt also benefits from the new type classes with a saving of 221 euros in fully comprehensive insurance.
The evaluation system for the type classes follows a transparent principle: a vehicle type with fewer damages and lower compensation payments is assigned to a more favorable type class. In comprehensive insurance, additional regional factors such as theft rates, weather damage, and wildlife collisions, as well as the vehicle value, are included in the evaluation.
It's worth noting that major changes in the type classes are rare, according to the GDV. The motorcycle models that receive a significant advantage in the new insurance classification by GDV starting January 1, 2026, are not explicitly detailed in the search results. However, example passenger car models that see notable benefits include the Renault Clio 1.3 and the VW ID.4 Pure 125, which are each rated two classes lower, indicating reduced insurance costs. Conversely, models like the Renault Austral 1.3 face higher classifications. Since the results focus mainly on car models, specific motorcycle models with considerable advantages are not provided.
The GDV's type class reform for motor vehicle insurance is affecting millions of drivers, with the electric Smart #1 becoming about 100 euros more expensive in fully comprehensive insurance, and the Mercedes GLC 220D additionally saving 107 euros in liability insurance. Drivers are encouraged to review their insurance policies and consider potential changes in the new year.
