Sayonara, Skype! The era of Microsoft Teams begins as Skype takes its final bow.
Internet bids farewell to vintage video-calling service, Skype, reminiscing about its role in shaping youthful digital connections
Let's face it, we've all heard the phrase, "All good things must come to an end." Yet, here we are, once again, dealing with this profound reality as Microsoft yanks the plug on Skype on May 5.
Launched in 2003 and acquired by Microsoft in a whopping $8.5 billion deal from eBay, Skype was initially designed to help people "connect with the folks that matter most in your life and work." Bill Gates stumbled upon the concept of this innovative Voice Over Protocol (VoIP) service that revolutionized communication, connecting us with our loved ones across the globe.
Today, video-calling appears to be a commonplace phenomena, thanks to the societal ubiquity of social networks. However, in the early days, the ability to video chat or conduct HD voice conversations with your far-flung loved ones seemed nothing short of magical.
In late February, Jeff Teper, the president of collaborative apps and platforms at Microsoft, announced via a post that it was time for Skype to say goodbye, as Microsoft shifted its attention to Teams to "simplify our free consumer communication offerings."
Fast-forward to April 29, and Microsoft emphasized how Traffic on Teams surged four times its original volume. In a statement, the company revealed, "With the significant advancements and adoption of Microsoft Teams, the number of minutes spent in meetings by consumer users has risen nearly four-fold." Teams, which is free, offers features such as 1:1 calls, group calls, messaging, and file sharing, as well as enhanced ones like scheduling meetings, managing calendars, and community building.
With our unconscious dives into the abyss of tech jargon, we can't forget about the pool of sentimental attachment. Skype's untimely demise has sparked an outpour of tributes on social media, from heartfelt declarations like "Our whole childhood, deleted just like that" to tear-drenched messages like "Skype shutting down feels like my childhood just packed its bag and left."
James Hennessy, an editor at Australian news outlet Capital Brief, explained to ABC News Australia that Skype marked the "first time people used a video chat software." Hence, its early dominance in the market was quite understandable. Despite its initial success, the platform began to falter as it succumbed to a "series of acquisitions."
Internet's Mournful Farewell to Skype
The last week has witnessed a wave of emotional expressions on social media, as users grieve Skype's departure. Overly emotional messages, like "A nostalgic service that allowed us to connect," and "Our tribute to the OG VoIP," surfaced on Twitter, formerly X. Some even reminisced about Skype's iconic outgoing sound, saying, "In three days, this sound will only linger in our memories. RIP SKYPE. LONG LIVE THE NAME."
Back in February, a Twitter user lamented the slow decline of Skype over the years, admitting that, at one time, the term "Skype" became synonymous with video-calling.
"They had us using 'skype' as a verb to refer to the concept of video calling. How did they mess this up so badly?" the person wrote. Another confessed, "RIP Skype - from being the greeting in long-distance relationships to becoming a ghost in the Teams machine. End of an era for the OG video calls." Many fondly recalled their formative years and shared their fondest memories, including playing games and socializing over Skype.
Moving forward, all user accounts—along with their chat history—will be transferred to Microsoft Teams. Although we had Skype long before Zoom, Discord, and Instagram entered the scene, their time has come, and it's now Microsoft Teams' turn to dominate the communication landscape.
From playing games to sharing important life updates, Skype was there, helping significantly bridge long-distance relationships in an era when it seemed nearly impossible. Thank you for your friendship, Skype. Farewell and godspeed.
