Interview with Julie Strietelmeier, Featured in The Gadgeteer
Julie Strietelmeier's Journey from Engineering to Gadget Reviewing
Julie Strietelmeier, the founder of The Gadgeteer, retired early from her job as an engineering software technician at Cummins, Inc. However, her passion for technology did not end with her retirement.
Strietelmeier's love for technology began in her childhood, influenced by her father's various mechanical hobbies. This fascination continued into adulthood, with her first experience with technology characterized by a love for mechanical toys and taking them apart.
In the late 90s, Strietelmeier's interest in technology took a new turn when she bought an early PDA device. Inspired by her experience, she started sharing her thoughts on it on USENET message forums. This marked the beginning of The Gadgeteer, a personal passion project that Strietelmeier started to share her enthusiasm for gadgets and technology.
The Evolution of The Gadgeteer
Over the years, The Gadgeteer has grown from a solo effort into a large, well-established gadget review site. It now boasts over 35 writers and close to 25,000 posts, reflecting its consistent, long-term dedication to reviewing a wide variety of gadgets and consumer technology products.
The site's growth can be attributed to its expansion of content and contributors, prolific content output, and maintaining relevance and growth by covering emerging and popular tech trends. For instance, recent posts on The Gadgeteer include coverage of highly funded ergonomic office chairs on Kickstarter.
Julie Strietelmeier's Review Process
Strietelmeier's review process is meticulous. When she receives a product for review, she spends time photographing it using her iPhone. She then uses the product extensively and creates a review template that includes sections like "what is it?", "what's in the box", "design and features", "what I like", "what needs to be changed", and "final thoughts".
Challenges in Reviewing
Dealing with problems that come from reviewing many products is a challenge. However, Strietelmeier advises aspiring reviewers to always tell the truth in their reviews.
A Balanced Life
Despite her passion for technology, Strietelmeier enjoys non-techy hobbies such as drawing, leathercraft, journaling, hiking, and photography. She lives in Columbus, Indiana with her wife Jeanne and an American Bobtail kitten named Ozzy.
The Gadgeteer, which began in 1997 as a personal passion project, has come a long way. It continues to be a valuable resource for those seeking honest, in-depth reviews of the latest gadgets and technology products.
