Introducing the Kali Audio SM-8 Active Studio Monitor – a new audio solution for recording studios.
In a recent development, Kali Audio unveiled its newest addition to the Project Santa Monica line of studio monitors - the SM-8. This new model comes equipped with an 8-inch woofer, a 4-inch midrange, and a 1-inch metal dome tweeter, as part of the company's 3-way coincident architecture approach.
This innovative design is intended to create a true acoustic point source for superior imaging and detail. The unique geometry around the midrange ensures a seamless transition to the edge of the speaker, significantly minimizing off-axis lobing for lifelike, crisp stereo imaging.
The woofer design has been refined to reduce magnetic flux modulation, thereby decreasing distortion and enhancing dynamic range. The midrange has been optimized not only for its own frequency handling but also for its role as the tweeter's waveguide. The tweeter is an aluminum dome with a special geometry to reduce high-Q ultrasonic resonances.
The SM-8 delivers a THD of less than 0.5% and boasts a lower frequency response of 37 Hz at -10 dB. With a total power of 300W, it can produce peaks up to 119 dB SPL, enabling reference-level listening at distances up to 5 meters.
User-editable DSP is integrated into the speaker for room calibration. This DSP enables control over parametric EQs, delays, and trims per speaker. Processing is handled natively on the speaker's own DSP chip, keeping the signal chain simple and avoidance of additional latency during room calibration.
Users can program these DSP features using a USB drive connected to the speaker or by networking speakers together via Ethernet. Real-time changes in processing settings are supported when networked, and multiple tuning profiles can be toggled between.
The Kali Audio SM-8 is now available, with an MSRP of $2,499. This high-end, self-powered studio monitor is designed for critical production environments, offering precision, clarity, and powerful performance.
