The United States Congress has scheduled a hearing for October 8, 2025, to discuss issues related to online platforms and radicalization. The hearing will see the testimony of several notable figures, including Gabe Newell, the CEO of Steam, and Ted Litchfield, a PC Gamer team member.

The hearing comes in the wake of an investigation into a 22-year-old Utah native, Tyler Robinson. The Secret Service has been called upon to aid the FBI in this investigation, which is reportedly related to the U.S. Treasury. However, details about the nature of Robinson's involvement remain unclear.

Robinson's Microsoft account, which is 11 years old and has nearly 5,000 hours of gameplay, has been a focus of the investigation. The reported activity on his account does not include a 'smoking gun' that could be tied to radicalization, political or otherwise.

Robinson logged 399 hours playing Helldivers 2, a game referenced in an engraving on an unused bullet casing found in the investigation. Interestingly, nearly half of his logged playtime, approximately 2,148 hours, was spent in Rare's co-op pirate simulator, Sea of Thieves. Robinson even wrote a user review for the game, stating, 'If you play alone, you will die alone.'

Other games on Robinson's Microsoft account include Pictopix, Deep Rock Galactic, Viscera Cleanup Detail, and 126 hours of PowerWash Simulator. Despite the nature of some of these games, it's complex to read Robinson as a disaffected loner, as most of them are cartoonish and cooperative.

Some of the content on Robinson's Microsoft account, such as his own comments, have been hidden according to a report by Bloomberg. The investigation into Robinson's activities continues, and more details may emerge as the hearing approaches.

In addition to Gabe Newell and Ted Litchfield, the CEOs of Twitch, Discord, and Reddit have also been invited to testify before Congress regarding issues of radicalization in online platforms. The hearing aims to address the role these platforms play in shaping public discourse and the potential for radicalization.

As the date for the hearing approaches, public interest in the investigation into Tyler Robinson and the role of online platforms in radicalization continues to grow. The testimony of Gabe Newell, Ted Litchfield, and other industry leaders promises to shed light on these important issues.
