iPhone 17's initial sales surpass those of its predecessor models
The much-anticipated iPhone 17 series has been launched, and it seems that the demand for these new models is higher than the iPhone 16 series. Pre-orders for the iPhone 17 series are outpacing those for the iPhone 16 during the same period last year, according to industry analysts.
Apple itself is the main sponsor of the iPhone 17 sales campaign in India, with no other company identified as a primary sponsor in the search results. To cater to the growing demand, Apple is increasing its production and retail presence in India. Foxconn and Tata will handle manufacturing, and Apple stores will be expanded in cities like Bengaluru.
The iPhone 17's average selling price (ASP) is almost 3 times that of the Indian smartphone market's average ASP. Despite the high price point, IDC estimates that the iPhone 17 series will account for 10% of the smartphone market by the end of 2025. In Q3 2025, IDC estimates that over 5 million iPhones will be shipped, with the new iPhone 17 series accounting for 15-20% of these shipments.
The design and specs upgrade, the tendency of iPhone buyers to prefer the retail store channel, and the introduction of better value propositions such as the upgrade of the base variant to 256GB, cashback, and up to 24 months of EMI, have all contributed to the positive reception of the iPhone 17.
Sanyam Chaurasia notes that iPhone 17's pre-orders are almost 30% higher compared to iPhone 16 last year. Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint Research, stated that the initial demand for the iPhone 17 series is 19% higher than the iPhone 16 series. Better traction for the Pro and Pro Max models is expected in the festive season in Apple stores and premium retailers.
The success of the iPhone 17 launch is reflected in the stock market. The shares of Redington, a key distributor of Apple products in India, surged over 9% on Friday, as the sale of iPhone 17 began in India. The stock of Redington closed the trading day at ₹299.5, up almost 4% on the BSE.
Upasana Joshi expects this positive trend to continue through the upcoming Diwali quarter, making the iPhone 17 Apple's star product for the festive season. Counterpoint Research expects Apple to achieve record sales in the upcoming festive season, growing by 28% year-on-year (y-o-y).
With Apple increasing its production and retail presence in India, it seems that the demand for the iPhone 17 series will continue to grow. The iPhone 17 has seen opening sales higher than its previous variant, the iPhone 16, and with the festive season approaching, it is expected to be a strong performer in the Indian market.
