"Is Steve Jobs likely to disapprove of Apple's latest MacBook design changes?"
Apple, the tech giant known for its innovative products, is reportedly planning to enter mass production of its first MacBook models with touch displays next year. This move, if confirmed, would mark a significant shift in Apple's laptop design, reflecting the company's long-term observation of iPad user behaviour.
The concept of a touch screen MacBook Pro isn't entirely new. It was back in 2010, during the launch of the iPad, that Steve Jobs, Apple's late co-founder, expressed skepticism about touchscreen laptops, labelling them as "ergonomically terrible" and "didn't work". However, times have changed, and it seems Apple is ready to reconsider this approach.
The original iPhone, launched in 2007, was a departure from traditional smartphone designs that relied on stylus input, instead opting for a touch screen. This shift proved successful, and in its post-Jobs era, Apple launched the Apple Pencil, which transformed the iPad into the best drawing tablet. Currently, the iPad is considered the best drawing tablet in the market.
In recent years, Apple has managed to make the iPad more like a Mac, and it's believed that the touchscreen MacBook Pro, if developed, could potentially be included in Apple's "best 2 in 1 laptops roundup". The touch controls on the touch screen MacBook Pro are believed to enhance productivity and overall user experience.
However, it remains to be seen if Apple can make a touchscreen laptop work effectively. A video resurfaced showing Jobs' opinion on a touchscreen MacBook in 2010, and no current information suggests that Apple has successfully made a touchscreen MacBook.
The rumours about the touchscreen MacBook Pro have been circulating since 2025, with a tweet from Ming-Chi Kuo, a seasoned Apple leaker, suggesting that the device is set to enter mass production next year. It's worth noting that Kuo's tweet about a potential touchscreen MacBook Pro in 2026 is speculative and not confirmed by Apple.
The rumoured MacBook models are expected to be the first OLED MacBook Pro, further distinguishing them from current models. Additionally, there are rumours of an iPad/MacBook hybrid in development by Apple, but these remain unconfirmed.
As always, only time will tell if these rumours pan out and if Apple can successfully introduce a touchscreen MacBook into the market. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
