Justice grants freedom to two violent streamers implicated in the death of Jean Pormanove, following the initial inquiry
In a tragic turn of events, the French streamer Jean Pormanove, known as "JP", passed away on Sunday night to Monday in Contes, north of Nice. The platform implicated in the investigation following his death is Kick, a live- streaming platform known for its lax content moderation.
The investigation was opened following an article by Mediapart in December that exposed abuses suffered by "JP" and another man, "Coudoux". The article revealed that they were subjected to violence and humiliation on live streams, sometimes encouraged by money from spectators. The investigations continue, including hearings of the environment of the interested parties and the exploitation of videos and materials seized.
On January 8, 2025, Owen Cenazandotti and Safine Hamadi, two influencers, along with two other unidentified men, were arrested in connection with the case. However, after being heard by the investigators, "Naruto" and "Safine" were eventually released. The custody measures for "JP", "Coudoux", "Naruto", and "Safine" have been lifted.
Yassin Sadouni, the lawyer for "NarutoVie", reiterated that his client has no responsibility in Jean Pormanove's death and is available to investigators. Both "JP" and "Coudoux" refused to be examined by a doctor and a psychiatrist. They contested during their interviews that they were victims of violence. However, both claimed that the alleged violent acts were part of scenes aimed at creating a buzz to earn money.
Kick, a platform founded in 2022 in Melbourne, Australia, as a competitor to Twitch, has come under fire for its controversial streams including violent and extreme content. In response to the ongoing investigation, Kick announced that all co-streamers who participated in Jean Pormanove's live broadcast have been banned pending the investigation.
The Nice prosecutor's office announced an autopsy of Jean Pormanove's body will take place on Thursday. The investigation has been opened for offenses including public provocation to hatred or violence, voluntary violence against vulnerable persons, and dissemination of recordings of images relating to the commission of offenses.
Yassin Sadouni announced his intention to file a complaint following a reported campaign of cyberharassment against his client. The investigation into the cause of Jean Pormanove's death continues, with the hope that justice will be served for the late streamer.
Raphaël Graven was the real name of Jean Pormanove. His death has sparked a wave of concern and calls for stricter regulations on live-streaming platforms to protect their users.
