Kensa's Shoebox NX: Revolutionizing UK Home Heating with Efficient Ground Source Heat Pump
Kensa has unveiled the Shoebox NX, a ground source heat pump that could revolutionise home heating in the UK. The compact device, small enough to fit inside a cupboard, promises significant savings and efficiency gains compared to traditional methods.
The Shoebox NX boasts an impressive A+++ energy efficiency rating and a lifespan of 25 years. It consumes 40% less electricity than air source heat pumps (ASHPs), reducing energy bills and easing strain on the electrical grid during peak hours. Moreover, it can heat water to temperatures exceeding 60°C, eliminating the need for immersion heaters at home.
The device's efficiency is reflected in its Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 4.36, making it five times more efficient than traditional gas boilers. When used with existing networked ground source heat pumps (NGSHPs), the Shoebox NX can be up to 20% cheaper to operate annually than ASHPs. In an average 3-bedroom Victorian terraced home, the savings could amount to £900 compared to an ASHP installation.
The Shoebox NX also offers passive cooling during summer months, providing a cost-effective alternative to conventional air-conditioning methods. Its compact size makes it highly versatile, fitting seamlessly into various home layouts.
Kensa's ambitious plans include a 'mass heat pump rollout' across the UK with the Shoebox NX, claiming it is suited to all seasons. Despite no other organisation in the UK having announced a similar broad-based heat pump rollout, the Shoebox NX's efficiency, savings, and versatility could pave the way for a greener, more cost-effective future for home heating.
