Kido Schools Cyberattack: 8,000 Children's Data Stolen, Ransom Refused
Kido Schools, a UK-based educational institution, has been targeted in a cyberattack. The incident, carried out by a group known as Radiant, resulted in the theft of data belonging to approximately 8,000 children. The attack was limited to UK facilities, with no impact on US or Indian locations.
Radiant gained access to Kido Schools' systems and demanded a ransom of over £100,000 in Bitcoin. The group published children's profiles on the dark web and contacted parents to make the demand. Despite the threat, Kido Schools refused to pay the ransom, leading to a loss for the cyber gang.
Following public outcry, Radiant deleted all stolen photos and claimed to have deleted all data. However, cybersecurity expert Jen Ellis believes the group ended the extortion attempt due to the attention it received, rather than for moral reasons. The London police have launched an investigation into the incident. It remains unclear who initially gained access to Kido Schools' systems, as Radiant did not directly access them but purchased the data from another cybercriminal.
The cyberattack on Kido Schools highlights the growing threat of data breaches in educational institutions. While the stolen data was claimed to be deleted, it's impossible to verify if this was indeed the case. The incident serves as a reminder for schools to bolster their cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive student data.
