Kim Jong-un conducts on-site review of tactical assault drones
North Korea has recently increased its focus on drone development, with the latest tests showcasing the use of AI-powered drones. This shift in emphasis comes as the country has dispatched troops to support Russia's war with Ukraine.
According to reports from North Korea's state media, KCNA, the tests took place at the Unmanned Aeronautical Technology Complex. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw the performance tests of these drones, equipped with AI technology, in March.
The tests approved the effectiveness of Kumsong-series tactical attack drones for combat uses. The Kumsong-line tactical attack drones were first reported by North Korean state media, marking a significant development in the country's drone technology.
Kim called for making primary efforts to rapidly develop the newly-introduced artificial intelligence technology. He emphasized the need to advance applicable artificial intelligence technology, bolster the operational capabilities of unmanned weapons and equipment systems, and expand and strengthen the serial production capacity of unmanned weapons.
The North's latest drone tests may be related to a defense development policy to be unveiled at a key party congress. Hong Min, a senior researcher at South Korea's Korea Institute for National Unification, suggests that these tests are intended to demonstrate North Korea's ability to reconnoitre enemy activity and attack major radar or air defense bases.
Meanwhile, the five-day Iron Mace tabletop exercise between South Korea and the United States is scheduled to conclude later in the day. The exercise focuses on integrating Washington's nuclear assets and Seoul's conventional capabilities to deter North Korean threats.
Kim stated that drones have emerged as key military assets in modern warfare. However, the search results do not specify the names of the companies or institutes involved in the development and production of the Kumsong series tactical attack drones.
As North Korea continues to advance its military capabilities, the international community will closely monitor its actions and assess any potential threats to regional stability.
