Kraftwerk welcomes back Christopher Bauder, once a member of the band, for a reunion
Christopher Bauder, a renowned artist known for his immersive installations, is set to launch his latest creation, VEKTOR, at Berlin's iconic Kraftwerk. This industrial cathedral will serve as the backdrop for Bauder's ambitious show, running from February 1 to April 7, 2024.
For this show, Bauder will be in full control of the 30-plus speaker systems, using sound samples recorded in Kraftwerk to create drum beats and transform the building into a musical instrument. The Fraunhofer Institut has even made an acoustic model of Kraftwerk for the show, ensuring a truly unique sonic experience.
The walls of Kraftwerk will also play a significant role in the show's sound, complementing the drum beats and creating a symphony of industrial echoes. The music piece for VEKTOR was composed by Robert Lippok, with Bauder writing the music for his first album, VEKTOR, which he will perform live during the show.
Bauder is no stranger to Kraftwerk, having previously staged SKALAR in 2018 and DEEP WEB in 2019. His return to the venue is featured in issue 227 of Exberliner.
VEKTOR is inspired by mathematics, specifically the principles of vectors. To bring this concept to life, Bauder has developed a network of 55 lasers, mobilized by new motorized winches created by him and his team. A new software has also been developed to control the lasers and the entire show.
In addition to his work at Kraftwerk, Bauder is currently working on a light show projected on two 400-meter skyscrapers in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His previous projects, such as placing 8,000 illuminated balloons across the city for the 25th anniversary of Mauerfall, demonstrate his knack for creating large-scale, immersive experiences.
Interestingly, the average time a museumgoer spends looking at an artwork is around 10 seconds. However, visitors at Bauder's permanent exhibition space, DARK MATTER, usually spend between 60 and 90 minutes, testament to the captivating nature of his installations.
To ensure the best possible experience for visitors, Bauder has partnered with the Fraunhofer Institut to refine the three-dimensional sound for VEKTOR. They are also researching noises and their effects on humans for the show, aiming to create an immersive and engaging environment that resonates with visitors on a deeper level.
VEKTOR is one of the 24 Reasons to Love Berlin in 2024, as featured in issue 227 of Exberliner. Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in Bauder's latest masterpiece at Kraftwerk Berlin.
