Land Rover's Baby Defender: Compact, Stylish SUV Coming in 2027
Land Rover is set to introduce a new Tesla-inspired model in 2027, targeting a fresh range of customers and focusing on electrification. The vehicle, currently known as the 'Baby Defender', will be a compact, stylish SUV with a clear Defender lineage.
The prototype's design is unmistakably Defender, with a compact, angular shape and the iconic Defender design language. Measuring around 4.60 meters in length, under 2 meters in width, and under 1.80 meters in height, it slots into the midsize SUV class. This new model will prioritize a lifestyle-oriented focus, appealing to those who enjoy the outdoors without compromising on everyday practicality.
Land Rover will use its new Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) for the baby Defender, promising impressive range and fast charging capabilities. Meanwhile, Volkswagen is preparing to launch the electric mid-size SUV, VW ID. Cross, in early 2027. Priced just under 30,000 euros, it aims to attract customers transitioning from combustion-engine SUVs like the VW T-Cross, offering compact dimensions, a practical range, and appealing features.
The new Defender model, tentatively named 'Defender Sport' or 'Defender 80', is expected to launch in 2027. With its compact size, stylish design, and electric powertrain, it aims to fill a gap in the market, appealing to a new generation of customers seeking a blend of lifestyle and practicality.
