Largest-Ever Superyacht COSMOS Commences a New Age in Luxury Yacht Build
Lürssen's Innovative Superyacht COSMOS Makes Waves
The Lürssen Group has unveiled its latest creation, the 374-foot (114.2-meter) superyacht COSMOS. Designed by Marc Newson, this groundbreaking vessel pushes the boundaries of luxury, technology, and sustainability.
COSMOS is the first Lürssen yacht to be equipped with a hybrid propulsion system, featuring two 500 kW methanol fuel cells. This innovative technology allows for zero-emission cruising at 7 knots for 1,000 nautical miles or to remain at anchor for up to 15 days without emitting any pollutants[1][3][4]. The fuel cells are integrated with complex safety and operational systems, complementing traditional diesel engines for flexibility.
The explorer-inspired profile of COSMOS is designed for global exploration, including light ice conditions, making it capable of navigating all five oceans and seven continents safely[1][3][5]. To achieve this, the hull has been reinforced to Ice Class 1D.
Marc Newson's design for COSMOS is characterised by extensive, custom-engineered glazing. The pièce de résistance is the owner’s study, housed under a large glass dome on the upper deck. This engineering feat offers uninterrupted 360-degree views through thick curved glass panels[1][2][3][4]. Additional glazing includes a continuous glass band around the cabin deck, a glass-encased bow observation lounge beneath the helipad, and an aft balcony with glass balustrades.
Newson was responsible for both the exterior and interior design of COSMOS, resulting in a cohesive and organic evolution of aesthetics characterized by flowing lines and a seamless, sculptural silhouette. This futuristic yet elegant design departs sharply from conventional superyacht styling[2][4].
COSMOS boasts six decks, each optimized for luxury and long-range cruising. Features include a forward-shifted superstructure, an elongated aft deck with a swimming pool and Jacuzzi, a helipad on the bow, and a dry dock and sledge system for launching the largest tender.
Innovative design features abound on COSMOS, from the glass-encased observation lounge located forward in the bow beneath the helipad, to the crystal clear, imperfection-free sections of glass used in the owner's study dome, crafted by Lürssen[1][2][3][4].
The open aft deck seamlessly blends a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, and sunbathing areas. The launch of COSMOS coincides with Lürssen Group's 150th anniversary, making it a significant milestone in their history[6].
Peter Lürssen, CEO of Lürssen Group, considers COSMOS to be one of the most significant yachts in their history. He will be featured in an upcoming "Superyacht Influencer Interview". The glass dome in the owner's study offers 360-degree panoramic views from atop the yacht[7].
The owner of COSMOS is described as courageous and visionary, with a commitment to innovation. The yacht will be used as a research installation for a methanol fuel cell, furthering its pioneering status[2].
COSMOS sets a new benchmark in superyacht design and construction, with its sleek, sculptural, and futuristic design[8]. This groundbreaking vessel is poised to redefine the future of luxury yachting.
