Lenovo Faces Challenges from US Tariffs but Remains Competitive

Lenovo, the Chinese multinational technology company, has reported a 108% increase in net income for the June quarter, reaching $505 million [6]. However, the company's shares saw a dip despite the better-than-expected results, underperforming the Hang Seng Index's slight gain [1].

The reason behind this discrepancy lies in the looming threat of US tariffs. Lenovo, like its rivals, is not immune to the impact of these tariffs. The impact of US tariffs on Lenovo's PC shipments is expected to cause a year-on-year weakening starting from the second half of 2025 as new sweeping tariff measures take effect [1][2].

In early 2025, Lenovo saw accelerated shipments as customers front-loaded purchases to avoid the tariffs, resulting in a strong PC shipment growth of 15% in the June quarter and a 6.7% year-on-year increase in Q1 2025, outperforming competitors [1][2][5]. However, this positive surge is likely to be short-lived due to tariff-related uncertainty, with analysts forecasting a decline or slowdown in shipment growth after this front-loading effect wanes in the latter half of 2025 and beyond [1][2].

Lenovo is taking proactive steps to mitigate the risks posed by these tariffs. The company has diversified its production footprint to countries like Vietnam and Mexico [3]. Additionally, Lenovo is expanding its non-PC businesses such as AI infrastructure and services, which help balance margin pressures from US tariffs [3].

The Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) recorded a quarterly revenue of $4.3 billion [2]. While this segment's revenue scale is quickly expanding, it could potentially weigh on profitability due to rising sales [3][7]. However, segment margins for Lenovo ISG could be improving as the revenue scale expands [8].

In the December quarter, the Lenovo ISG segment reversed a loss due to heavy spending on infrastructure for AI training and applications [9]. As a result, Lenovo's revenue for the same quarter climbed 22% to $18.8 billion [10]. The Lenovo ISG segment sells products such as servers and storage [11].

Lenovo's Chairman Yang Yuanqing stated that the impact from US tariffs is "very limited" for the company [4]. Despite the 30% tariff levy on Chinese PC exports to the US, Lenovo's global sales remain robust, with the US making up less than 20% of its revenues [4]. Ongoing tariff pauses provide some temporary relief for the company [4].

The overall PC market grew 8.4% in the same quarter, its fastest pace since 2022, driven by a replacement cycle as support for Windows 10 ends later this year [1]. Lenovo, like its rivals, touts so-called AI PCs equipped with more powerful hardware to perform workloads from real-time transcription to image generation [12].

In summary, Lenovo's early 2025 PC shipments surged due to customers accelerating orders ahead of tariffs, but shipment growth is expected to weaken year-on-year because of new US tariffs starting from the second half of 2025 and beyond [1][2]. Lenovo's response to these challenges includes geographic diversification of manufacturing, growth in AI-driven infrastructure, and expansion of services segment to offset tariff impact and sustain long-term growth [3]. This strategic positioning helps Lenovo remain competitive despite near-term margin pressures and shipment challenges linked to tariff uncertainties [3][5].
