LG Energy Solution secures victory in patent dispute with China's Sunwoda Group concerning battery innovation.

LG Energy Solution, a leading energy solutions provider, has been rapidly expanding its partnerships within the automotive battery industry. One notable development includes a collaboration with General Motors (GM) that entails the commercialization of advanced lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic battery technology.

In this partnership, both companies aim to manufacture LMR prismatic cells for future GM electric trucks and full-size SUVs. With a higher proportion of manganese in the cathode, these cells exhibit increased energy density and reduced costs in comparison to traditional high-cobalt or high-nickel chemistries.

The new LMR prismatic cells offer a remarkable 33% higher energy density than the top-performing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells at a similar cost. Consequently, GM's electric vehicles could potentially achieve over 400 miles of range while minimizing the cost of battery packs.

Pre-production of these LMR prismatic batteries is due to commence at an LG Energy Solution facility by the end of 2027. Subsequently, commercial production is planned to start in the United States through the Ultium Cells joint venture by 2028. The final battery cell designs will be validated at GM's newly constructed Battery Cell Development Center in Warren, Michigan, and at LG Energy Solution's own research facilities.

Apart from this collaboration, LG Energy Solution has partnered with Liontown Resources to secure a continuous supply of lithium, a crucial material for battery production. This strategic move supports the company's ambition for future growth and supply chain resilience.

These developments highlight LG Energy Solution's dedication to progressing battery efficiency, lowering costs, and ensuring the availability of critical materials for tomorrow's electric vehicle batteries.
