Lübeck's Historic Wall Bridge Evolves for Modern Use
Lübeck's historic Wall Bridge (Wallbrücken) has seen a transformation since its construction by the Lübeck municipal construction authority. Originally a railway bridge for the Lübeck-Büchener Railway, it now serves as a vital link for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians.
Completed by the Lübeck Bauverwaltung, the single-span steel arch bridge stands at approximately 3.7 m above the water. Initially built for train traffic along Wallstraße over the city moat or the Trave, it was later converted to accommodate changing transport needs. The historic arch construction was reinforced with additional side supports to ensure its current use. Today, it stands as one of the oldest surviving bridges in the city.
The Wall Bridge in Lübeck, once a railway bridge, has evolved to serve modern transport needs. Its conversion to a pedestrian and cycle path reflects the city's changing infrastructure, while its historic arch construction remains a testament to Lübeck's rich history.
