Marvel to Limit Output with Maximum of 3 Films and 2 Series Annually, According to Bob Iger
Pared-Down Marvel Far Ahead for Disney
Marvel Studios, under Disney's wing, has been on a bit of a rollercoaster ride in recent years. Not only has the company been tirelessly churning out content post-Endgame, but the abundance of Marvel goodness has spilled over into the small screen as well. As Disney hungrily eyes the post-Endgame era, this excess has led to a mixed bag - some stellar output, and some not-so-great. Now, Disney's bigwigs are hoping to tighten the reins a tad.
In a recent quarterly earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger spilled the deets, stating, "We're slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or a maximum of three." This move, Iger explains, is all about focusing on big-ticket successes.
From Star Wars to Disney animation and live-action flicks, Disney+ has pushed the company to produce a deluge of both theatrical releases and original content to beef up its streaming platform. Some smash hits have emerged - like the excellent X-Men '97, currently dominating weekend box office reports - but overall, Marvel Studios has realized that its movie-making formula doesn't quite translate to TV, regardless of quality.
So, two-to-three blockbusters and two seasons of TV might still feel like a lot of Marvel, but Iger seems pumped about the future. "There's couple of good films in '25 and then we're heading to more Avengers," Iger shared, adding that he's confident in the team and the IP they're working with.
With current plans for Marvel set to release four films in 2025 - including Captain America: Brave New World, Blade, Thunderbolts, and Fantastic Four - fans can expect a jam-packed year. After the much-anticipated Agatha Harkness TV series drops later this year, we can also look forward to Daredevil: Born Again in 2023, followed by the long-awaited Ironheart. But if Iger's new course holds, we might see another shakeup in Marvel's release schedule to scale back in 2024.
