Meta Ordered to Offer Chronological Instagram, Facebook Feeds
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has been ordered by a Dutch court to alter its timeline settings following a lawsuit filed by digital rights group Bits of Freedom. The ruling, which Meta plans to appeal, centres around users' freedom to choose between a chronological or personalized feed.
The court's decision is a response to the violation of users' right to freedom of information. Currently, Meta automatically reverts users' feed settings to a personalized display, which prioritizes content based on algorithms rather than chronological order. This practice has been deemed unacceptable by the court.
Meta must now expand its timeline settings to allow users to make a free and autonomous decision about the use of personalized settings. The option to choose between a chronological or personalized feed must remain, ensuring users have control over how content is selected for them to see in both apps. Bits of Freedom, who filed the lawsuit, welcomes the ruling, stating that Meta must respect user preferences.
Meta has been given a deadline to comply with the ruling. However, the company has announced its intention to appeal, believing that responsibility lies with the EU Commission, not individual EU countries. The ruling is a significant step in ensuring users have more control over their online experience, with the Irish Data Protection Commission and similar bodies likely playing a role in its initiation.
