Microsoft gains control over GitHub's operations
In a recent development, GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke announced his departure, marking a new chapter for the popular coding platform. Microsoft, the parent company since the $7.5 billion acquisition in 2018, has decided not to appoint a successor to Dohmke. Instead, a reorganisation of management responsibilities has been put in place.
Julia Liuson, head of Microsoft's developer division, will now oversee GitHub's revenue, engineering, and support functions. Meanwhile, GitHub's chief product officer Mario Rodriguez will report to Asha Sharma, VP of Microsoft AI platform, as part of the new structure under Microsoft's CoreAI organization, led by EVP Jay Parikh.
This reorganisation comes at a time when GitHub is experiencing significant growth. The platform now boasts 20 million users, an increase of 5 million from just three months ago. In Q2 2024, GitHub Copilot had 1.3 million paying customers, and subscriptions accounted for 40 percent of the subsidiary's revenue growth. The annual run rate of GitHub was reported to be $2 billion according to Microsoft's 2024 Q4 results.
Thomas Dohmke's departure marks a new beginning for GitHub. He stated that as AI agents take on more coding tasks, the role of developers and the importance of coding will grow. His successor, Nat Friedman, who previously held the CEO position, will undoubtedly continue this vision.
As for Dohmke, he is leaving to work on founding another company. Asha Sharma, in a post to LinkedIn, expressed excitement to work with Parikh, Liuson, Rodriguez, and the GitHub leadership team, signalling a positive outlook for the future of GitHub within Microsoft.
