Microsoft intends to utilize Clippy, hoping to enhance users' appreciation for Copilot.
Revamped Microsoft AI Assistant: A Fresh Take on Copilot
Microsoft reached a 50-year milestone on April 4, marking the occasion with a showcase about their AI-focused assistant, Copilot. Taking center stage of the event was Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI. Despite a brief disruption due to employee protests, Suleyman discussed the latest features of Copilot, including its upcoming task-completion capabilities such as purchasing event tickets, making dinner reservations, or gift shopping.
One notable feature of Copilot is the planned customizations, allowing the AI to develop a unique appearance tailored to individual users. "Imagine if Copilot had an appearance that you could customize and shape according to your taste," Suleyman said. "We're in the early stages of exploring this idea, and it's incredibly exciting."
During the presentation, Suleyman interacted with Copilot on screen, asking it to change forms. This demonstration highlighted Copilot's potential to transform into various forms, even including the once-controversial and now well-loved Microsoft mascot, Clippy. The audience reacted positively, cheering at the prospect of Clippy's return.
"Whatever you fancy, we're game," Suleyman added. "Maybe something entirely out of the blue. The possibilities are endless, and I believe these Copilot appearances might signify the start of a truly unique way for you to claim Copilot as your own."
Embracing Clippy's Return
Microsoft appears to acknowledge the amusing history surrounding Clippy, an animated paperclip character that originated in Office 97 and offered suggestions for users during certain tasks. It didn't win over fans and was eventually removed from Microsoft Office in 2001. Nevertheless, the company continued to reference Clippy in a lighthearted manner.
In 2021, Microsoft's official Twitter account teased the return of Clippy through a tweet that promised to replace the paperclip emoji with Clippy if it gained more than 20,000 likes. As of now, the tweet has amassed over 146,000 likes. Despite this, Clippy's reappearance has been limited, only substituting the paperclip emoji in Microsoft 365.
Copilot's Reimagined Capabilities
Beyond the customizations, Copilot's new features and enhancements aim to revolutionize productivity, security, and collaboration. These updates include file-sharing summaries in SharePoint, citation, voice, and summary features in Word, and streamlined presentation creation in PowerPoint. Additionally, Copilot offers AI-powered agent collaboration, multi-agent orchestration, and custom agent development through the Agent Store.
Microsoft 365 Copilot Wave 2 Spring Release introduces a redesigned app, Copilot Notebooks, and image generation features for human-agent collaboration. The Copilot Actions feature, available for Copilot Pro users in the U.S., helps users complete tasks rather than just find information.
With these advancements, Microsoft aspires to offer a more personalized and efficient AI-powered experience to its users. The potential for endlessly customized Copilot appearances might mark the beginning of an exciting new era for Microsoft AI.
