Microsoft revives Edge extension functionality, a featureset abandoned following years of testing.
Microsoft Edge May Soon Offer a One-Click Extension Disable Option
Microsoft Edge may be on the brink of introducing a long-awaited feature: the ability to disable all extensions with a single click. Presently, this function is under testing in the Edge Canary version but is yet to be rolled out to wider user bases.
However, it's important to note that Microsoft has a history of experimenting with similar functionalities; a few years ago, the company tested a similar feature but ultimately decided against releasing it. The latest version of this feature exhibits slight differences from the earlier test, but its primary functionality remains largely unchanged.
While browsing on any website, users can access the extensions menu to disable all extensions for that specific site. When implemented, this feature would mirror a similar option available in Google Chrome.
Currently, some extensions do offer a pause function. For instance, uBlock Origin includes a large on/off button to enable or disable the extension when viewing ads on specific sites or if the adblocker obstructs desired content from appearing on a page.
The new Edge feature, if introduced, would provide users with a swift and straightforward method to pause all extensions, which could enhance the user experience on certain sites as needed.
Notably, Google Chrome already offers a similar option, and Microsoft has previously ventured into this domain, suggesting that this extension feature would be a valuable addition to Edge.
Moreover, Microsoft has been working on several new features for Edge. One of the latest developments includes a new tab page for Edge that centers around Copilot. This page, which used to require a hidden flag, is now being gradually rolled out to users.
Microsoft also revamped the Edge Add-ons site earlier this year. Edge supports the installation of extensions from the Chrome Web Store, making the Edge Add-ons site a less frequently used resource for some people. Microsoft's update to the Add-ons page simplifies the process of finding the best extensions and features a reorganized themes section.
At present, it remains uncertain if Microsoft will release the new extension feature or if the company will scrap the option once more. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
- The single-click extension disable feature, which Microsoft Edge developers are testing, aligns with previous software endeavors by Microsoft, such as the similar functionality tried out on Xbox and Windows technology.
- As the new extension feature in Edge mirrors a similar option available in Google Chrome, Microsoft might be motivated to introduce it to enhance the overall user experience in their software products.
- Besides the one-click extension disable feature, Microsoft is reportedly working on several other enhancements for Edge, like the new tab page that provides a user-friendly interface centered on Copilot, and updates to the Edge Add-ons site for easier extension discovery and themes organization.
