Nigeria Launches National E-Invoicing System to Boost Tax Compliance

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has launched a new electronic invoicing solution, aiming to transform business tax compliance in Nigeria. The national e-invoicing system, an electronic fiscal system (EFS), went live on August 1, 2025, following a successful pilot phase. It provides real-time visibility into commercial transactions and ensures invoice authenticity, accuracy, and completeness.

The e-invoicing solution is a critical tool in implementing the Nigeria Revenue Services Reform Act. It aligns with global best practices and supports the Federal Government's objectives of enhancing revenue assurance and reducing tax evasion. Large taxpayers, defined as companies with an annual turnover of at least 5 billion Naira, were the first to be onboarded. Over 1,000 companies, representing 20% of eligible firms, have embraced the e-invoicing solution within the first two weeks of its launch.

Service providers have been incorporated into the e-invoicing ecosystem to facilitate taxpayer onboarding, integration, and invoice transmission. MTN Nigeria was the first taxpayer to transmit live electronic invoices to the FIRS, officially starting the e-invoicing regime. The FIRS has extended the deadline for large taxpayers to finalize their onboarding and integration processes to November 1, 2025.

The e-invoicing solution is expected to bring significant benefits to the Nigerian tax system, including improved transparency, increased revenue collection, and reduced tax evasion. With the successful launch and the positive response from large taxpayers, the FIRS is optimistic about the future of e-invoicing in Nigeria.
