Nike Launches Materials Sustainability Index for Greener Choices

Nike has introduced the Materials Sustainability Index (MSI), a tool designed to assess the environmental impact of materials used in its products. This initiative aims to provide comprehensive cradle-to-grave evaluations, enabling consumers to make more informed choices.

Previously, life cycle assessments (LCAs) were used to measure environmental impact, but these were often resource-intensive and conducted late in the production process. The MSI, however, is designed to be accessible and user-friendly. A public online tool allows casual users to view overall ratings for different materials, while an API enables other developers to build tools using this data.

The MSI was developed by Nike, but it is now maintained by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), which includes major companies such as Adidas, H&M Group, and Walmart. These companies collaborate to improve environmental and social sustainability in the apparel and footwear industry. Nike has also created an Environmental Apparel Design Tool to help designers make more sustainable choices. Traditionally, companies measured success through profit, but now they are increasingly seeking to assess and reduce their environmental impact.

Nike's MSI data, including primary data, documentation, and methodology, is publicly available under an Open Database License. This transparency encourages other companies and consumers to consider the environmental impact of their choices, promoting a more sustainable future in the apparel and footwear industry.
