Nikon Challenges Cinema Giants with New ZR Camera and Upcoming Cinema Lenses
Nikon has signalled a return to the cinema and video-production world, aiming to challenge established players like Canon, Sony, and RED. The company's recent moves, including the launch of the compact 6K RAW ZR camera, have set the stage for a broader push into the market.
Nikon has confirmed that dedicated Nikkor Z Cinema lenses are in development. These lenses will feature geared focus rings, T-stop markings, and a consistent build for professional use. The first of these lenses are expected to arrive within the next 6 to 9 months. Nikon is not entering this field untested, having produced Cine-Nikkor lenses in the past for 8mm and 16mm film cameras.
The ZR camera, which introduced a new workflow with RED's R3D NE codec, dual base ISO, and 32-bit float audible recording, has already made waves in the industry. Weighing in at just over 600g, it offers internal 6K RAW and Nokia's OZO audio, targeting filmmakers with its specifications. Nikon's surprise entry into the Z Cinema line with the ZR has set the stage for a more comprehensive offering of lenses in the coming months.
Nikon's plans for the next 12 to 24 months include the release of a range of cinema lenses, including primes and zooms. While specific focal lengths have not been officially announced, Nikon is likely to focus on gaps in its current lens range to provide a more comprehensive offering for various applications. The company aims to carve out a space alongside its competitors in professional cinema workflows, provided it delivers a consistent set of T-stop primes and zooms.
