Nostalgic Throwback: Latest Retro Handheld Device Revives Entertainment of Early-2000s Slide Phones
Nostalgic Blast from the Past: Anbernic's Latest Retro Handheld
Anbernic is striking a chord with our nostalgic hearts, and it's working like a charm. Recently, they released their Anbernic RG34XXSP – a retro handheld reminiscent of both the Game Boy Advance SP and GameCube, all in one affordable device. Oh, the millennial in me can't help but feel a pang of gaming nostalgia just imagining it. Now, Anbernic is doubling down on the nostalgia train with a retro gadget you might not have had on your retro gaming wish-list – 2000s slide phones!
Meet the RG Slide, the latest addition to Anbernic's ever-growing lineup of handhelds. With a TPS IPS screen in a 4:3 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1,280 x 960 pixels, it's a far cry from my iPhone 13, boasting a 120Hz refresh rate, a contrast ratio of 1200:1, and a max brightness of up to 500 nits. Emulation-wise, Anbernic promises PS2, Wii, GameCube, and Dreamcast games will run at a 640 x 480 resolution, whilePS1 and N64 games will run at a 320 x 240 resolution[3].
The star of the show isn't its emulation capabilities or the fancy screen, though. The form factor – reminiscent of 2000s slide phones – sets this handheld apart[4]. The RG Slide opens up to reveal two thumbsticks, a D-pad, ABXY buttons, and a central start and select button. The design evokes memories of not just the Xperia Play[6], but also LG and Nokia's iconic sliding phones from the past. I swear, if I could slide open my old LG Shine Slide one more time...
The screen is touch-enabled, so, in theory, you can use touch controls, but who'd want to when you've got built-in thumbsticks? You can even play games in a vertically oriented screen, which should work wonders for mobile gaming. Bonus points – this device runs on Android, making it perfect for running games like Genshin Impact. No release date or price has been announced yet, but with Anbernic's history of budget-friendly handhelds, it's safe to expect a competitive pricing. It's definitely not the real-life slide phone you've been longing for, but hey, maybe it can fill that void!
