Online vigilance essential for true independence as internet fraud and misinformation increase
In a significant event held in conjunction with the Malaysia Day 2025 celebrations, the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, emphasised the importance of critical thinking when consuming online content. The event, named 'Jiwa Merdeka: Aspirasi Belia Madani', was organised by the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports and took place in Buttower.
The programme, which brought together over 1,000 youths, included a variety of activities, with national awareness segments, e-sports, and intellectual discussions forming a significant part. The Minister's advice to young people was to not easily believe viral content shared by influencers on platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram.
Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and Datuk Ismail Yusop were also present at the event. The Minister stressed that not all information encountered online is true and urged the public to remain vigilant when using the Internet and social media. He warned about threats from scammers and purveyors of slander in the fast-paced Internet era.
One of the highlights of the event was the e-sports championship, with a total prize worth RM8,000. Competitions in e-football, PUBG, Mobile Legends, and Tekken were held, with medals, certificates, and trophies awarded in various categories, including leadership, volunteerism, sports, cultural, and entrepreneurship.
A convoy ride featuring 200 motorcycles carrying the Jalur Gemilang was held, with youths participating from across the country. The 6.1-kilometre convoy commenced at Petron Seberang Jaya and concluded at the official ceremony venue. The convoy ride was part of the programme's activities.
Fahmi Fadzil, in his speech, reminded the public, especially youths, not to be complacent with the rapid development of digital technology. He emphasised the importance of verifying information before sharing it on social media. The Minister stated that true independence is not merely celebrated symbolically on National Day and Malaysia Day, but must be embraced with wisdom in facing current challenges.
The 'Jiwa Merdeka: Aspirasi Belia Madani' event aimed to inspire and empower the youth of Malaysia, encouraging them to take an active role in nation-building. The event served as a reminder to all, especially the younger generation, to approach online information with a critical eye and to contribute positively to the digital community.
