The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has released a comprehensive list of digital still image file formats as part of their Digital Preservation Framework. Each plan within this list carries a unique NARA Format ID, and they represent various categories of digital preservation frameworks.
Some of the file formats included in the NARA Digital Preservation Framework are Adobe PhotoDeluxe (with the NARA Format ID NF00104), Adobe Photoshop (NF00105), AV1 Image File Format 1.1 (NF00862), CCITT T.4 Group 3 compression (Fax image file) (NF00191), Canon RAW 1.0 (NF00468), Canon RAW 2.0 (NF00469), CCITT T.6 Group 4 compression (Fax image file) (NF00488), Computer Graphics Metafile Binary 1 (NF00145), and Computer Graphics Metafile Binary 2 (NF00546).
In addition to these, the framework also includes High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) (NF00638), JPEG File Interchange Format (JFIF) 1.02 (NF00492), JPEG Raw Stream (NF00493), JPEG Tiled Image Pyramid (JTIP) (NF00221), JPEG Unspecified Version (NF00641), and JPEG XL (NF00802).
These formats are explicitly categorized as Digital Still Image formats in the NARA Digital Preservation Framework's linked data repository. The plans are accessible through NARA's Open Data using TTL format, with examples of NARA-provided URLs for the plans including those for Adobe PhotoDeluxe, Adobe Photoshop, AV1 Image File Format 1.1, CALS Compressed Bitmap, Canon RAW 1.0, Canon RAW 2.0, CCITT T.4 Group 3 compression, CCITT T.6 Group 4 compression, Computer Graphics Metafile Binary 1, and Computer Graphics Metafile Binary 2.
It is important to note that these plans are not exhaustive or universally applicable. The NARA Digital Preservation Framework provides a valuable resource for understanding the various digital still image file formats and their unique characteristics, but it does not encompass every possible format in existence.
