OpenAI Transforms ChatGPT into a Software Platform with New SDK and AgentKit

OpenAI has revealed significant updates to ChatGPT at its DevDay 2025 conference, transforming the chatbot into a full-blown software platform. The company announced the launch of its new App SDK, allowing third-party services to build interactive tools within ChatGPT. Notable companies like Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow have already integrated their apps using this new SDK.

OpenAI's strategy is to centralize user attention and make third-party services interoperable, turning ChatGPT into an operating system for reasoning. The new App SDK enables developers to build fully interactive apps that live inside chats, allowing users to perform tasks like booking flights or designing graphics without leaving the chat window.

In addition to the App SDK, OpenAI unveiled 'AgentKit,' a platform that lets developers build and deploy autonomous AI agents using a visual drag-and-drop interface. AgentKit components are rolling out in phases, with some tools already generally available and others in beta. These autonomous AI agents, or workflows, can reason, retrieve data, and act within OpenAI's ecosystem.

OpenAI has also made Codex, its GPT-5 model customized for coding tasks, generally available. With these updates, OpenAI aims to transform ChatGPT into a super-app and operating system for reasoning, anchoring both developers and users within its walled garden and expanding its reach as a software platform.
