OpenAI Unveils AgentKit: The First Developer-Facing AI Agent Platform
OpenAI has unveiled its first developer-facing AI agent platform, AgentKit, in 2025. This new tool allows developers and businesses to create, deploy, and optimize AI agents directly on the OpenAI platform. The launch event showcased several innovative features and partnerships.
AgentKit was demonstrated with a live Canva app that designed a poster and pitch deck for a dog service business, and a Zillow app that displayed properties and engaged in follow-up conversations. OpenAI also introduced two affordable models: gpt-realtime-mini, around 70% cheaper than its predecessor, and gpt-image-1-mini, a cost-effective variant of its image processing model.
The company has expanded its API offerings with GPT-5 Pro, boasting a context window of 400,000 tokens and up to 272,000 output tokens. Pricing starts at $15 per million input tokens and $120 for output tokens. Additionally, Codex, the AI-powered coding assistant, is now generally available with new features like Slack integration, an SDK for workflow integration, and admin tools for businesses.
OpenAI's new Apps SDK, built on the Model Component Protocol (MCP) and enhanced with HTML rendering, login functions, and a payment protocol, enables third-party apps to appear directly in the chat, support full-screen view, and dynamically interact with the model. At launch, apps from partners like Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, and Zillow are available, with more like DoorDash, OpenTable, Target, and Uber joining soon.
OpenAI's AgentKit and Apps SDK mark significant advancements in AI agent development and integration. These tools allow businesses to create and deploy AI agents more efficiently, and users to interact with a wider range of applications directly within the chat interface. With more partners on the way, the potential for AI-driven innovation continues to grow.
