Opera theatre in Krasnoyarsk to undergo maintenance instead of major reconstruction

The grand plans for refurbishing the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre have hit a snag. Instead, the building will undergo a simple renovation - authorities find this plan more feasible and, obviously, less expensive. The renovation contract has been awarded.

Details about the altered plans came from an updated regional state program titled "Development of Culture." The proposal for changes can be found on the official portal.

According to the document, the project entitled "Reconstruction of the building of Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre named after D.A. Hvorostovsky" has been removed from "The List of State Property Objects... Subject to Construction, Reconstruction, Technical Retrofitting or Purchase" due to a change from reconstruction to capital repair.

In the Ministry of Culture, which was contacted for comment, they reported that a technical inspection of the theater was conducted by AO "Grazhydproekt," which recommended a renovation.

"The experience of capital repair at the Krasnoyarsk Youth Theatre indicated the possibility of resolving all the issues during such work," - stated the first deputy minister of culture, Natalia Gel'rud.

The renovation includes, among other things, replacing engineering networks, updating the stage, auditorium, foyer, and facade.

"A more accurate list of works will be determined by the project," they added in the Ministry of Culture.

Tender for the renovation of the theater has already been announced - today. The initial contract price stands at 94.7 million rubles, allocated from the regional budget.

The theater is the client of the works, and among the tasks for the contractor are a survey of the building with a floor area of 13,100 square meters, conducting engineering surveys, preparing project and working documentation.

According to the technical assignment for tenders, there are specific parameters for the design - for example, the theater will undergo a complete replacement of technical equipment and mechanical systems, as well as verification of the acoustic characteristics of the hall (with the possible exception of carpeted coverings, which will also be removed on the 2nd and 3rd floors in the foyer). In the hall, chairs will be replaced, along with the stage and its machinery, and so on. The list of conditions for creating a project is quite long and detailed.

The building of the theater will "preserve its historical appearance," according to the Ministry of Culture. The lighting design may change, as shown in the technical assignment for tenders.

This means that the contest for the best architectural and urban design concept of the opera in 2023 has gone to waste.

We remind you that more than 30 architectural and project bureaus, including foreign ones, submitted their applications for the creative competition. The Moscow company "Vauhaus" won with its project for an additional platform on the roof.

The scenic platform proposed by "Vauhaus" was to be created on the roof of the theater, but here's how it would look according to the competition entry by the Moscow architects:

Second place went to the St. Petersburg "Studio 44", and third place was shared between the Krasnoyarsk A2 and the Moscow company "MVP."

The Theater was presented with fantastic ideas for transformation - with air structures, brightly lit, and the creation of an internal multi-functional complex not only for performances but also festivals, lectures, and theatre experiments.

Earlier, the Ministry of Culture announced that innovative solutions from all winning architectural and urban design concepts would be considered during reconstruction.

However, this will no longer happen.

Let's not forget, this is a typical story for Krasnoyarsk. Grandiose projects, such as the Choreographic College and Posdeev Center, for which international tenders were also announced, will not likely be built in the immediate future in the Siberian province.

It remains unclear what the final cost of the capital repair will be after the creation of the "traditional" project and subsequent tendering for the execution of the work. Project-costing documentation for the renovation should be ready by November 1st.
