Paraguay Tackles EV Charging Chaos: Standardization on the Way
Paraguay is grappling with interoperability issues in its public charging network for electric vehicles (EVs). A lack of standardization in connector types is causing confusion and increasing costs. The country is now working towards harmonizing its charging structure.
Currently, up to three different connector types can be found at a single charging station in Paraguay. This variety complicates user experience and drives up costs. To tackle this, energy authorities are drafting a regulation to standardize connector types across the country's charging network.
The Type 2 connector, prevalent in Europe and adopted in several regional countries, is gaining traction in Paraguay. A trend favouring its adoption has emerged at public charging stations. Diego Lovera, President of the Chamber of Vehicle and Machinery Distributors (Cadam), confirmed these plans to Mobility Portal Latin America.
Despite a working group involving the Ministry of Industry and Commerce promoting electromobility, no resolution on charging standards has been issued yet. Meanwhile, the regulatory authority is developing a regulation for the standardization of plugs at charging stations. Paraguay has also implemented tax incentives, including zero import tariffs and VAT elimination, to boost EV sales, which currently represent around 8% of total vehicle imports.
Paraguay's efforts to standardize connector types aim to achieve harmonization in its electric vehicle charging structure. This move is expected to enhance user experience, reduce costs, and promote the adoption of EVs in the country.
