"Paul Bäumer and His 'Gust of Wind'"

In the vibrant city of Hamburg, Germany, a renowned aviation pioneer named Paul Baümer made his mark in the 1920s. Baümer, whose life and work are set to be featured in AERO HISTORY's eighth episode, was admired by the international aviation scene.

Baümer Aero, the company Baümer founded, was based in Hamburg. Two promising engineers, Siegfried and Walter Günter, were hired directly from university by Baümer to work at his company. One of their most notable creations was the "Sausewind," an aerodynamically perfected racing plane that brought Baümer immense fame.

The "Sausewind" was a marvel of engineering, with its bright red colour making it stand out in the skies. This plane was instrumental in Baümer's rise to fame, leading him to participate in prestigious aviation events such as the German Circuit and B.Z. Prize of the Skies in May 1925.

Wolfgang Borgmann, an editor at AERO INTERNATIONAL since February 2022, will be presenting the story of Paul Baümer, Thea Rasche, and Baümer Aero's aircraft models in the upcoming AERO HISTORY podcast. Borgmann, who has been an aviation journalist for 30 years, has also worked as a freelance journalist and author for 22 years.

Borgmann's parents worked for airlines, perhaps influencing his lifelong passion for aviation. This passion is evident in the 32 books he has written, published in both German and English. He is primarily responsible for overseeing the Industry & Technology section at AERO INTERNATIONAL.

Sadly, Paul Baümer passed away before his time, but his legacy lives on. His funeral procession was accompanied by 20,000 people, a testament to the impact he had on the aviation world. Despite extensive research, there are no available records providing information about the key employees Paul Baümer hired at Baümer Aero in Hamburg before becoming known for the "Sausewind."

The "Sausewind" continues to be a symbol of Baümer's innovative spirit and the golden age of aviation in Germany. With the upcoming AERO HISTORY episode, the story of this remarkable man and his groundbreaking aircraft is set to be shared with a new generation.
