Pharmaceutical conglomerate slashes annual expenses by $1.2 million across three sites and streamlines supplier operations.
In a commendable move towards sustainability, MPC, a leading company, has made strides in reducing its energy consumption and carbon footprint. The company's journey began on September 25, 2015, when it joined the UN Global Compact's Caring for Climate Initiative.
MPC's sustainability policy, targeting a 25% reduction in energy consumption and a 20% reduction in water consumption across its supply chain by 2020, has been instrumental in these achievements.
One of the key factors contributing to these reductions was the adoption of Cimetrics' Analytika Pro solution for monitoring and analyzing data from various HVAC and process points. This comprehensive data collection, occurring continuously from over 56,000 physical points, totaling over 5 million data samples per day, provided valuable insights.
Over 1,000 Analytika software algorithms were used to identify opportunities for energy reduction, improved reliability, and reduced operations and maintenance costs. One such opportunity was the identification of a pneumatic actuator leak that was not detected on-site but was corrected by the team, resulting in annual energy savings of $46,731 and a reduction of 404 metric tons in annual carbon emissions. This is equivalent to taking 2,174 cars off the road.
The simple payback for these energy savings was less than 7 months, making it a cost-effective solution for MPC. The net present value of the energy savings was $1.29 million.
MPC's sustainability efforts have not been limited to energy efficiency improvements. The company has also been exploring opportunities such as renewable energy and water conservation measures to achieve its sustainability goals.
Systems monitored included 351 air handling units, 180 chilled water and hot water pumps, 68 chillers, 40 cooling towers, and more than 2,500 terminal units. These efforts represent 5% of MPC's total annual utility cost, demonstrating the significant impact of these initiatives.
Through its sustainability efforts, MPC achieved an annual CO2 emissions reduction of 10,325 metric tons, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future. However, without explicit data from verified sources or MPC's official disclosures, the specific methods and strategies used by MPC to achieve these reductions remain inferred based on typical commitments under the Caring for Climate Initiative. For precise details, consulting MPC’s official sustainability reports or the UN Global Compact communications would be necessary.
