Expanded Intellectual Property Office Building in New Delhi Boosts India's Intellectual Property Infrastructure

Union Minister Piyush Goyal recently inaugurated the expanded Intellectual Property Office (IPO) building in New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in strengthening India's intellectual property infrastructure. The expanded facility, built by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), now spans 140,120 square feet, up from the original 2014 structure.

The expansion added five new floors to the existing structure, increasing the personnel capacity from 200 to over 700. This increased capacity will enable the IPO to handle more patents, trademarks, copyrights, and designs efficiently and at a larger scale.

The modernised IPO building includes a range of eco-friendly features, such as rainwater harvesting, a sewage treatment plant, and plant waste decomposers. These features are expected to reduce maintenance costs, enhance productivity, and improve overall service delivery.

The building also houses a state-of-the-art International Training Centre on the seventh floor, equipped with advanced digital tools and high-speed internet. This centre will play a crucial role in training personnel and fostering innovation within the IPO.

Union Minister Goyal emphasised that innovation has been a part of India's identity for centuries, citing the Konark Temple as an example of ancient precision and engineering. He described innovation as both a form of intellectual property and a symbol of sovereignty.

Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada predicted India's emergence as a global talent hub for electronics, IT, and semiconductors. The expanded IPO building is expected to strengthen India's position in global IP administration, making it easier for innovators to protect their intellectual property and attract global IP activity.

The Centre is also allocating Rs 1 Lakh Crore for Research and Development, driving innovation. The expanded IPO building is a testament to this commitment, providing modern workspaces for patents, designs, copyrights, and trademarks, as well as examination halls and international affairs divisions.

The project for expanding the IPO building was approved in 2018, and the Centre purchased the land during the Vajpayee Government. Arun Jaitley performed the bhumi puja for the project. The project cost for the expansion was Rs 88 crore.

In summary, the expanded ISA building plays a crucial role in advancing India's intellectual property ecosystem, enabling India to effectively support innovators, attract global IP activity, and strengthen its research and innovation landscape as part of national development goals.
