The Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor (GWM) has taken a significant step forward in the realm of autonomous driving with the launch of pre-sales for the updated Tank 500 SUV. This latest model is equipped with the third-generation driver assistance system, Coffee Pilot Ultra, which boasts a comprehensive suite of smart sensors and advanced capabilities.

The Coffee Pilot Ultra system is powered by an Nvidia Orin-X smart driving chip, providing the processing power needed for its complex functions. This system features a total of 27 smart sensors, including a 128-channel high-resolution LiDAR, three millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 11 high-definition cameras.

The LiDAR, provided by Hesai Group's ATX LiDAR, is mounted on the roof of the updated Tank 500. The cameras are strategically placed on the front fenders, rear spoiler, and other positions to optimise data collection for autonomous functions.

Advanced driving assistance capabilities such as Full-scenario Navigation On Autopilot (NOA) and memory parking and automatic parking functions are among the features that this system offers. The NOA allows for high-speed and urban pilot-assisted driving without the need for HD maps, while the memory parking and automatic parking functions support smart parking scenarios.

The updated Tank 500 is available in two variants: the Tank 500 Hi4-T and the Tank 500 Hi4-Z. The Hi4-T focuses more on off-road performance, while the Hi4-Z is more family use-oriented. The Hi4-T is equipped with a single motor with a maximum power output of 120 kW and a battery pack with a capacity of 37.1 kWh, offering a WLTC battery range of 110 kilometers. On the other hand, the Hi4-Z features dual motors, delivering a combined power output of 455 kW, and a battery pack with a capacity of 59.05 kWh, providing a WLTC battery range of 201 kilometers.

In terms of pricing, the pre-sale prices for the Tank 500 Hi4-T and Tank 500 Hi4-Z are RMB 360,000 and RMB 388,800, respectively.

In the first seven months of the year, GWM sold 123,680 vehicles under the Tank brand, marking an 8.19 percent decrease year-on-year. However, in July, the Tank brand saw a 7.16 percent increase in sales, contributing 19.18 percent to GWM's monthly sales.

With the launch of the updated Tank 500 SUV, GWM continues to push the boundaries of autonomous driving technology, offering a state-of-the-art driver assistance suite with LiDAR-based sensor fusion, robust autonomous driving capabilities in complex environments, and smart parking automation, marking a significant step in GWM's ADAS evolution.
