Prioritizing trusted sources in search results: Google introduces option for users to favor websites like The Register in their search results
Managing Your Preferred News Sources in Google's Top Stories Box
Google has introduced a new feature called "Preferred Sources" that allows users to customise the news they see in the Top Stories box. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to set your preferred sources:
- Sign in to your Google account: To ensure your preferences sync across devices, log in to your Google account before proceeding.
- Perform a Google search on a current news topic: Start by searching for a news topic that interests you.
- Scroll down to the Top Stories section: Locate the section displaying the top news stories related to your search.
- Click the star icon or the icon to the right of the Top Stories header: Clicking this icon will open a dialog box.
- Search for and select the news outlets you want to prioritize: In the dialog box, you can search for your favourite news outlets. Once you find them, simply check the box next to the publication(s) you want to see more of.
- Refresh or reload the search results: After selecting your preferred sources, refresh or reload the search results to see a customised mix emphasising your chosen sources.
- Update your selections at any time: You can add multiple sources and update your selections as often as you like.
Once set, Google will show more stories from your preferred outlets in the Top Stories box and create a dedicated "From your sources" section below Top Stories. You will still see other reporting for a mix of viewpoints.
Please note that the use of preferred sources gives a site priority, but it does not guarantee that it will always appear in the Top Stories box. In tests, using the search term "windows lawsuit," El Reg showed up sometimes and not others as the page was refreshed.
This feature is currently available in English in the U.S. and India, with a broader rollout planned in these markets. If you wish to add a preferred source directly, you can go to the URL .
Users have the power to control which publishers appear in their Google search results for news stories, making it easier to stay informed about the topics that matter most to them.
