Reduced 2025 Mazda CX-90 Evaluation: Outperforming Honda and Toyota with Understated Power

The 2025 Mazda CX-90, a three-row SUV with a rear-wheel-drive-based drivetrain and a turbocharged inline-six motor, has made a strong debut in the market. With its sharp design and impressive performance, it's no wonder that sales of the CX-90 in 2024 surpassed the previous-gen's best year, selling 54,676 units.

The CX-90's engine is paired with an in-house built and designed eight-speed automatic transmission and sends power to all four wheels. The double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension deliver a firm and controlled ride, reminiscent of a Porsche. The interior of the CX-90 features a simple horizontal dashboard design that provides a good view out the front, and the cabin integration is premium, with top-shelf fit and finish.

One of the standout features of the CX-90's infotainment system is its upmarket finish, refined integration, and useful features such as a standard 10.25-inch display, available 12.3-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (both wired and wireless), Wi-Fi, and a customizable head-up display. These contribute to a premium cabin experience that justifies the vehicle’s higher pricing compared to competitors.

However, the infotainment system is not without its flaws. The user interface is considered among the worst in its class, with some reviewers describing it as awkward or distracting to use. The system's lack of wireless Apple CarPlay in lower trims and the general unreliability of the wireless charging pad are also points of criticism.

The CX-90's exterior design carries over from the previous model, with the horizontal lighting elements in the rear of the CX-90 emphasizing width over height. The front seat bottoms are a bit short for individuals taller than 5-foot-10, but the second row is stadium style, with occupants sitting higher than those in front. The third row is sufficient for children, but not as adult-friendly as in the Jeep Grand Cherokee L or Chevrolet Traverse.

The CX-90 returns an EPA rating of 23 mpg city, 28 highway, and 25 combined, making it more efficient than most V6-powered competition. The electronic T-shaped gear selector takes multiple seconds to unlock after the vehicle is started, which can be frustrating for some drivers. The controls for the climate control and audio system are easy to use, featuring buttons and knobs.

In summary, the 2025 Mazda CX-90 offers a premium three-row SUV experience with impressive performance and a top-shelf interior. However, the infotainment system's user interface and wireless charging pad issues dampen the otherwise high-end interior experience. Despite these issues, the CX-90 remains a strong contender in the three-row SUV market.

The 2025 Mazda CX-90's impressive fuel economy, with an EPA rating of 23 mpg city, 28 highway, and 25 combined, is a testament to its advanced technology, making it more efficient than most V6-powered competition. Adopting a sports car-like driving experience, the CX-90's double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension deliver a ride reminiscent of high-performance sports cars, merging lifestyle preferences with cutting-edge technology in the realm of cars.
