Renault Confirms UK Customer Data Breach as JLR Resumes Production

French car giant Renault has confirmed a data breach affecting UK customer personal data. The company has informed drivers via email about the incident, which involved an external data service provider. Meanwhile, rival JLR continues to grapple with the aftermath of a cyber attack that led to a month-long production shutdown, with some operations expected to resume soon. The UK government has stepped in to support JLR's suppliers with a £1.5 billion loan guarantee.

Renault UK revealed that customer data, including names, addresses, dates of birth, gender, phone numbers, vehicle identification numbers, and registration details, was compromised. However, financial and password data remained secure. The carmaker has not disclosed the number of affected customers but has apologized and assured them that data privacy is a top priority. Renault is advising customers to be cautious of unsolicited requests for personal information.

The cyber attack on Renault occurred through a third-party provider, with the specific entity not named in available reports. The incident comes as JLR works to recover from its own cyber attack, which resulted in an estimated £120 million loss for the group and left suppliers in limbo. Some JLR production is expected to restart in the coming days.

Renault UK customers affected by the data breach should receive further communication from the company. They are advised to remain vigilant against potential phishing attempts. JLR, meanwhile, continues its recovery efforts, with production set to resume soon. The UK government's £1.5 billion loan guarantee for JLR aims to support the group's suppliers during this challenging period.
