The Amazon Prime scripted drama, The Runarounds, has made waves for its unique approach to audio production. The post-production pipeline mirrored the hybrid spirit of the set, with Audio Movers facilitating remote collaboration. However, information about the mixer in the post-production pipeline remains elusive.

The show's audio production aimed to create a feeling of live music, not just a visual representation. Each musical performance in the series is recorded live, a testament to the team's commitment to authenticity. The Yamaha DM7 console served as the audio nerve center during production, providing the necessary flexibility for live recording, playback, IEM handling, and audio preparation for post-production, without overcomplicating the workflow.

The band in The Runarounds is real, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the series. The Yamaha DHR12Ms were used for foldback or rehearsal playback, offering tight, focused sound without cluttering the stage or interfering with shots. The Yamaha DHR15 speakers were used to cover the crowd during live performances, fed directly from the Yamaha DM7 console.

The classic micpres were used to track performances, and these recordings were then imported into Pro Tools for further mixing. The production team collaborated on plug-in lists and other aspects of the final mixes, with Scott Steiner, the show's audio engineer, managing an audio system that needed to balance live sound and post-ready recording.

One of the most challenging scenes to produce was the one shot inside a brick-walled warehouse turned makeshift club. The band played take after take for a room full of extras, and the scene required capturing the music, the crowd, and dialogue. Steiner and mixer Jason LaRocca developed a workflow where edited and pre-mixed sessions in Pro Tools were shared for further mixing.

The final mixes were upmixed to 5.1 for a cinematic effect. Despite the tight time windows and shifting camera angles, the production team managed to capture the energy and excitement of a live concert repeatedly. The speakers were scuffed from fast resets and location changes during the production, a testament to the intensity of the process.

In the final stages, the mixes were delivered in stereo to re-recording mixer Andy D'Addario for mixing with dialogue, effects, and more. The post-production pipeline, much like the hybrid nature of the set, was designed to ensure that The Runarounds delivers an immersive audio experience that complements its compelling narrative.
