Samsung Backs OpenAI's Stargate Project with Massive DRAM Supply

Samsung Electronics has stepped up to support OpenAI's ambitious Stargate project, promising a steady supply of low-power memory chips. This significant partnership aims to meet OpenAI's substantial DRAM demands, with projections indicating a need for up to 900,000 wafers monthly.

The collaboration kicked off with a visit from six OpenAI R&D staff to Samsung's Pyeongtaek Campus, a major DRAM production hub. The tour followed a letter of intent (LOI) signed by Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, committing to work together in areas like chips, data centers, and cloud computing.

The Stargate project's scale is evident in its DRAM requirements. OpenAI's officials explored Samsung's semiconductor manufacturing facilities in South Korea, further cementing the partnership.
